GCQ LIFE (GENERAL COMMUNITY QUARANTINE) : PROVINCE VS. SUB-URBAN

                                                               by Aether Rhynes

I never imagined that our normal life will drastically change due to the CORONA Virus outbreak. This pandemic is disastrous to our health and economy. The effect globally is really alarming with those increasing cases daily. It is highly contagious and sometimes it makes us panic. The worst-case scenario of this War against  COVID-19  is, we can't see it or at least predict where could be the enemy is. It could be anywhere and you can't notice it right away. You need to feel the symptoms and be tested first before you can confirm if you acquired it. However, how about those asymptomatic individuals who don't feel any symptoms? What if you just meet them from work, neighborhood, or it's a member of your family? Scary right? Amidst this crisis, we still need to calm down and think positive with all those negative happenings around us. Every individual must cooperate with those advisories coming from the government and the World Health Organization to fight against this disease.

Here in the Philippines, the government under President  Rodrigo Duterte implemented Enhanced Community Quarantine in Luzon on March 17, 2020; and waive some places to GCQ on May 16, 2020. The goal is to contain the virus from spreading across the country. The ECQ restricts the movement of people except for basic necessities, work, and health while GCQ allows the other non-food stores to open their businesses with timeframes.

I was in the province during the ECQ and got locked for 1.5 months before I traveled back to a suburban area. Life in the province is entirely different from the city. The province provides a simple life, and happy moments together with family. Apart from those, it provides fresh air, tranquility, fun, and a noise-free environment. In addition, you are close to nature which gives you a vibrant mood.

During the ECQ, every barangay has its market day once a week. Food is very essential to everyone during this pandemic and many experience financial shortage due to ECQ guidelines with close businesses, and no work, no pay scenarios. In the province, you just need to go out and look for an additional food source like chayote tops, camote tops, new buds of cabbage, potato, Chinese cabbage, cabbage, chayote and any kinds of vegetables available in your backyard garden or from the neighborhood. You just need to ask nicely from your neighbor during harvest time.

As a requirement for travel, we had to secure a work pass from our barangay then traveled to La Trinidad, Benguet. It was our market day schedule and before going out, we need to wear a facemask then line up to get our Pass Slips in our barangay hall needed when purchasing foods and goods. You have to wait in queue for a jeepney but mind you, it takes 2-4hours before you can have our ride so be early as possible. You are lucky if some generous strangers allow you to hitch a ride or offer a free ride.

We chose Tiongsan La Trinidad to have our grocery shopping. Upon arrival, you need to line up again before entering the shopping area. The police officers will strictly check your Pass Slip to be sure you went out on your right market schedule. Social distancing from other shoppers is also strictly implemented.

In front of the supermarket, you need to wash your hands with soap (I think the brand is Greencross antibacterial soap) then wait for your turn to sanitize your shoes. After all that process you can freely enter and get your shopping list. Inside the building, they kept on reminding everyone to keep the 1-meter distance. There is still a long queue in the cashier area, so you really need a lot of patience. After shopping, you are not allowed to roam around or standby if it's not that important. The other problem we encountered is how long we will wait for our ride if we wait for a jeepney, so we decided to take a garage vehicle. Our fare was around 120.00 pesos and it's a reasonable price rather than waiting for years for public jeepneys which are only limited to accommodate all passengers.

It's a good thing that we got stuffs good for 2-4weeks to avoid this kind of situation every week. It's better to buy in bulk and stay at home for the rest of the days than frequently go out and risk your health for possible virus contact.

Hopefully, this will end soon and we pray for everyone's safety especially the front liners who risk their lives just to serve and protect us.
